The global conversation over misinformation, disinformation and outright fake news continues to evolve. The nature of how we use social media often means that mistakes, misleading information or even deliberate lies can spread far and wide long before the truth has a chance to catch up.

But, as communications professionals, how can we help spot that misinformation and make sure we don't help spread it? Dr. Elise C. Lewis of the University of South Carolina School of Information Science, left, specializes in misinformation identification and prevention. She teaches students how to verify information, including reverse image searches, data literacy and good old critical thinking.
